On Tuesday, head to NiHao for a “halfsies” happy hour with Spiritless and Baltimore Spirits Co.

As summer starts its slow wind down, the Baltimore restaurant scene begins to heat up. This week brings birthday celebrations, start-up opportunities and more. Here’s a look at what’s coming up:

Openings & announcements

The Baltimore Business Journal reports that Brown Rice Korean Grill has reopened its Calvert St. location after a two-plus year closure due to the pandemic.

The Noisy Burger stall in R. House will close in December of this year – which means applications are open for the next tenant to take over the space. Applications for the space, which comes with a three- to five-year lease starting in early 2023, are due by Sept. 9.

Cureate Courses opportunity

Local small business owners in the food and beverage world have the chance to participate in a free 10-week small business accelerator program by Cureate Courses (and sponsored by Baltimore Community Lending via a grant from the University of Maryland Medical System).

Businesses based in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Prince George’s County and Charles County are eligible to apply for the program, which is designed to help startups and smaller businesses succeed. At the end of the program, two of the participating businesses will receive a $5,000 cash grant.

Applications are open now until Sept. 12.

Lady Gunther

Gunther & Co.’s new collab with McClintock Distilling Lady Gunther Gin – is now available for purchase by the bottle at the restaurant. The gin is also featured in some of Gunther’s specialty cocktails, so you can give it a try at the bar then take home a bottle.

Ekiben on the Strip

Ekiben’s Steve Chu went to Las Vegas with Munchies, the food series created by the crew at the online magazine VICE. Munchies has produced three episodes chronicling Chu’s adventures in Vegas; all are now available on YouTube to watch.

Cornhole at Union

On Saturday, Union Craft Brewing’s popular cornhole tournament makes a triumphant return. All afternoon, teams will compete for prizes and the honor of winning the tourney, as spectators (and team members) enjoy food and beers from the brewery.

Big Green Egg at the Four Seasons

Sunday is the day for the End of Summer BBQ on the rooftop terrace at the Four Seasons Hotel. The event, a collab with Big Green Egg, includes BBQ demonstrations, Moët Hennessy cocktails, and a special menu..

Birthdays all around

It’s a good week for restaurant birthdays around town.

On Sunday, Kooper’s North in Mays Chapel celebrates 10 years in business with a big, family-friendly birthday bash including live music, a pop-up shop, prizes and giveaways, cornhole, a champagne toast and, of course, food and drink specials.

Highlandtown fave Sally O’s turns two this week and is celebrating with a Tuesday night block party. The event will include free snacks along with an outdoor market with music and fun, artsy vendors.

Halfsies at NiHao

On Tuesday, Spiritless and Baltimore Spirits Co. are sponsoring a “halfsies” happy hour at NiHao. The first spiritless or half-spirited cocktail during the hour is on the house and guests ordering one of the cocktails of the day will have the chance to order off a special food menu of items available one time only.

Food & spirits at Sagamore

On Wednesday, Sagamore Spirit teams up with the crew from Lib’s Grill for an evening of whiskey and cocktails paired with Lib’s excellent food. Courses include dishes like a petit sirloin with sweet corn salsa and wilted spinach and the drinks menu includes three whiskey pours and two cocktails.
