Johns Hopkins University has begun construction of the next major capital project on its Homewood campus, a residence hall and dining facility.
Preliminary sitework began last Friday, one day after Hopkins held its universitywide commencement ceremony at Homewood Field.
Designed for first-year students, the residential hall will replace Alumni Memorial Residence I (AMR I), which was built in 1923 along Charles Street and frames the east side of the Freshman Quad on campus. The first phase of the project is demolition of that building to make way for its replacement.
The new residence hall will provide housing for 400 students, twice as many as live in AMR I, and the dining hall will have 41,000 square feet of space. A rendering shown last year to Baltimoreโs Urban Design and Architectural Advisory Panel showed four-story, brick-clad structures compatible with other Georgian-style architecture on Hopkinsโ core campus.
The designer is VMDO Architects of Washington, D. C. and Charlottesville, Va. The landscape architect is Mahan Rykiel Associates of Baltimore. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2028.
According to The Hub, Hopkinsโ in-house news source, five other buildings will house undergraduates while the new residence hall is being constructed, including McCoy Hall, Wolman Hall, AMR II, AMR III and The Academy on Charles at 3700 N. Charles St.
