After the hullabaloo over Dr. Ben Carson’s insensitive statements about same-sex marriage, and despite initial reports to the contrary, the celebrated neurosurgeon has voluntarily withdrawn as Johns Hopkins commencement speaker.
In his letter of withdrawal to the dean of Johns Hopkins Medicine, he offered “a most sincere and heartfelt apology” for his “poorly chosen words.” But he implied elsewhere in the letter that the backlash was unfounded and narrow-minded, writing wistfully of a future when “emphasis on political correctness will decrease and we will start emphasizing rational discussion of differences so we can actually resolve problems and chart a course that is inclusive of everyone.”
The irony of that last clause is so biting it almost curdles my computer screen.
