“Severely Decomposed” Body Found in White Marsh

Highway workers called 911 yesterday morning after spotting a body in a wooden area by the side of Maryland Route 43, not far from the on ramp to Interstate 95 South.

…outlet mall!

That’s right. If you’ve driven around White Marsh lately — or perhaps around and around and around as you try to figure out exactly where you’re supposed to turn for the Ikea parking lot — you’ve probably noticed the almost embarrassing paucity of shopping options.

Well, that’s all going to change once Paragon Outlets opens its 300,000 (but eventually 500,000) square-foot mall near the intersection of I-95 and Route 43. Construction is scheduled to begin soon, and the opening is penciled in for 2015. No info on brands yet.

Rosedale Doesn’t Want Low-Income Housing Either

Rosedale residents would rather this grassy lot stay as it is.
Rosedale residents would rather this grassy lot stay as it is.

Just a month after plans for a low-income housing project in White Marsh were scrapped in the face of local opposition, a similar project slated for Rosedale is about to get blocked by Baltimore County Council today, which is likely to pass an unprecedented resolution to refuse state funding.

The proposed development would include 50 homes, and residents would have the opportunity to eventually own through lease-to-purchase agreements. At least five of the homes would be earmarked for Section 8 renters.

Councilwoman Cathy Bevins introduced the resolution, saying that while she is “not anti-poor people,” she disagrees with the location, which she says is “already a very poor community,” one without a grocery store or public transportation.

Social Media Wins at Baltimore Train Derailment & Explosion Coverage

By now, you’ve presumably heard — yesterday afternoon, a garbage truck collided with a cargo train near White Marsh yesterday afternoon, causing a dramatic derailment, sending a giant plume of smoke into the air, and requiring the efforts of “more than 60 pieces of fire apparatus,” according to the Baltimore Police Department. Thankfully, no one was killed (though the truck driver is in serious condition at Maryland Shock Trauma). What struck me about this particular accident, though, was how much social media has changed our relationship with breaking news.

From Shipping Yards to Electric Cars: How Baltimore’s Economy is Changing

GM’s upcoming electric car, the Chevrolet Spark EV will get around 119 mpg, and may just be the future of the U.S. auto industry. (Certainly some people think so.) And as of last month, its motor is being produced in GM’s car parts plant in White Marsh.
