Federal Hill is about to get a brand new pizza joint – and it’s a good one. The restaurant, called &pizza, is part of a small, four-year old chain with 15 locations in the D.C. region; the Baltimore shop is the first outside the area immediately around Washington.
&pizza is known for cool seasonal pizzas and snacks, craft sodas and artisanal teas and for offering desserts from Milk Bar, the award-winning bakery founded by rock star chefs Christina Tosi and David Chang. Pizzas feature high quality ingredients and intriguing flavor combinations, like the Gnarlic (garlic ricotta and garlic sauce with pesto) and the Pineapple Jack (salami, pineapple and Cherry Bomb BBQ).
But the appeal of &pizza goes beyond the food – it’s also about a “go anywhere, do anything” culture, which is embodied by the ampersand logo. You’ll spot it here and there inside the restaurant, which also features a vibrant mural by local artist Josh Van Horne. But the logo isn’t relegated to the walls – you also might catch a glimpse of the ampersand directly on staff members. The staff fully embraces &pizza’s exciting culture – so much so that about 50 staff have gotten ampersand tattoos.
Baltimore’s brand new &pizza location opens on Thursday, May 26. To celebrate, the shop will offer free pizza for everyone on opening day. Plus, the first five guests to go full ampersand themselves, getting a “&” tattoo from nearby Brightside Tattoo Shop, will win one free pizza each week for a full year.
The D.C. locations of &pizza have racked up awards and recognition over their few short years in business. It’ll be exciting to see how such a well-received concept makes itself at home Baltimore, with our dynamic food scene and strong sense of community. With its commitment to great ingredients and energetic attitude, it seems likely that &pizza will be a fantastic addition to Federal Hill – and to the city as a whole.
&pizza is located at 1201 South Charles Street in Federal Hill.
