Torrey Smith suffered the unfortunate NFL offseason fate of being released from the 49ers earlier this week. But Ravens Nation held out hope that it would have a happy ending with the wide receiver’s return to purple and black. But on Thursday, he opted for another flock.
Smith, who played college football at University of Maryland and won a Super Bowl with the Ravens, ended up signing with the Philadelphia Eagles for a three-year deal, Pro Football Talk reported. It’s worth $15 million, so can you blame him?
Speculation mounted all week after recently-retired Ravens receiver Steve Smith Sr. broke the news of Smith’s departure from San Francisco with a Tweet. Torrey Smith only added to it by coming back to Maryland this week right after the announcement. He appeared before the General Assembly, and had coffee with WJZ meteorologist Marty Bass on Thursday. Jimmy’s Famous Seafood is even bringing back the Torrey Smith Show for one night only on Thursday.
But as it turns out, he really was here to promote his charity basketball game.
With NFL free agency opening on Thursday afternoon, the Ravens are rumored to be in the market for a receiver. Without Steve or Torrey Smith, “endearing to fans” had better be part of the job description. At the very least, we hope social media skills run in the family.
