We are pretty darn lucky here in Baltimore to have several lovely places to dine and drink with a water view. Now that the temperatures are rising, one of my favorites — Wit & Wisdom — is officially opening for the season this Wednesday, April 22. But this is not just any old opening. Oh, no. That would just be too boring. Executive Chef Zack Mills will host six local guests chefs for “Chefs Behind Bars” – and the chefs will all be making cocktails! (I love cocktails, did you know that?)
At this fun cocktail competition event, 100% of ticket sales will benefit Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. A “people’s choice” award will be presented based on tips, and a “judges’ choice” award will be based on the decision of six judges.
Wit & Wisdom’s Executive Chef Zack Mills will be joined by an impressive lineup of area chefs including Chris Becker of Fleet Street Kitchen, Tim Dyson of Dooby’s, Cyrus Keefer of 13.5% Wine Bar, Mike Ransom of B&O Brasserie, Sergio Vitale of Aldo’s Ristorante Italiano and Bryan Voltaggio of AGGIO. Each chef will be paired with a liquor sponsor to create one signature drink, which they will serve throughout the evening. I’ve polled the chefs and so far I’m hearing there will be Japanese whisky, gin, bourbon, among other spirits and most cocktails will feature local in-season ingredients. One will even feature pork-infused bourbon. (Hint: that’s from Zack Mills…God bless him.)
When I spoke with Zack, we talked about why this is an important charity to him and the six other chefs who are giving their time and effort. “We feel that No Kid Hungry is a really important organization doing great work to help end childhood hunger. We are very fortunate to be able to hold an event like Chefs Behind Bars to help raise awareness and money for them.” Indeed. And, having all of the proceeds go to the charity is huge and a big reason a lot of the chefs wanted to be a part of it. Everyone said yes, absolutely yes.
In addition to cocktail samples, guests will enjoy passed appetizers provided by Wit & Wisdom. A sample of the menu includes fresh ahi tuna poppers, crispy pork belly and gazpacho. Shake Shack will also serve frozen custard throughout the event. Live entertainment will be provided by RIO Quartet.
“One in five children in the U.S. struggles with hunger, including nearly 260,000 kids in Maryland,” said Billy Shore, founder and CEO of Share Our Strength. “We’re grateful for the support of Wit & Wisdom and all the Chefs Behind Bars participants as they help us fulfill our mission of ensuring children get the healthy food they need every day.”
This one-time event will be held on Wednesday, April 22, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Advanced tickets are $40 and $45 at the door with all proceeds benefiting No Kid Hungry. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit: Chefs Behind Bars. In the event of rain, “Chefs Behind Bars” will be rescheduled for Wednesday, April 29.
