As the school year winds down, Friends School of Baltimore transforms into an oasis of summer fun – Summer at Friends! This summer, campers have the opportunity to explore new camps, such as Builders & Makers or Pix & Flix, and old favorites – like Imagination Alive and Senior Camp!

“Our programs have been very popular, and spaces have filled quickly this spring”, says director Steve Cusick. “We spent a lot of time planning activities that meet our COVID safety guidelines but are still fun and engaging for the campers.”

Even our children have made this change – with virtual and hybrid school prevalent across our area. So while it may seem like a weird summer to sign your child up for a Creative Technology Camp, here are 5 reasons why you should:

Countdown to Camp

“Mom, Dad, when is camp going to start this summer?” It’s the question many parents are fielding this winter as we approach the one-year-mark of living through a global pandemic. Fortunately, it appears as though families have found their groove and are looking for ways to celebrate the resiliency and strength of their children with a fun-filled summer – at camp.

We asked some local camp directors to give us an idea of what’s in store for campers this summer.

Summer at Friends wraps up its Virtual Summer on August 7, completing eight fun-filled weeks of unique virtual experiences. There are program options for participants as young as 4 and as old as 14.

One of the options that the staff is most excited about for the last two weeks is the Senior Soiree. Designed for campers ages 10 to 14, Senior Soiree is a blend of themed activities and time to socialize with old and new friends. For the week of July 27 we’re bringing back a camp favorite, Cooking Around the World!  Join Mr. Sam and learn to create different quick and easy dishes to share with your family while at home!  We’re talking main dishes, desserts, and a whole lot of fun!

Virtual Summer Brings the Camp Experience Home!

Summer at Friends isn’t on campus this year, but your child can still enjoy many camp favorites from the comfort of home. The Camp Staff has carefully adapted some of their most popular programs to be offered as virtual classes. These Virtual Summer programs are designed with kids in mind, and are scheduled to make it easy for busy parents! Most programs are one hour long and feature a mix of instruction, time to share projects with friends, plus a few activities for children to enjoy throughout the rest of the day! There are plenty of options, and you can mix and match different classes to craft a schedule that is perfect for your child.

“The children have been really enjoying the Virtual Summer programs so far, even though it’s very different from a normal summer…” said Director of Day Camps, Steve Cusick, “we’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback. The classes are spread throughout the day so there is still time for the children to do other things away from the computer. Many are taking the opportunity to expand on the projects we’ve done in class.  We just added a variety of new programs for the next few weeks, including a digital photography class and a makers program.”

Newly added programs also include a creative writing class (“Writing with Friends”) and 2 math based classes (“Sports and Stats” and a “Math Tune Up”) that are a great way to keep children thinking while still having fun!
