Upper School science teacher and intramural field hockey coach Alvaro Salcedo will represent the United States at the 2014 International Hockey Federation Masters World Cup in the Netherlands. His trip is being partly funded by a grant from Gilman’s H.F. Williams Science Faculty Development Fund.
Salcedo is one of 18 field hockey players selected for the over-40 Men’s Masters National Team, which will compete against other national squads in Rotterdam from June 5-13, 2014. The team will debut against South Africa.
Through this experience, Salcedo hopes to bring more attention to the sport at Gilman, as well as bring new elite-level drills and practice techniques back to his players on campus.
While in the Netherlands – the birthplace of numerous Nobel laureates in physics – Salcedo will visit several scientific museums and institutions, including the Museum Boerhaave and the National Institute for Subatomic Physics in Amsterdam, to extend his knowledge of great scientists and share stories with his Gilman students.
