Artists still have time to submit their work depicting Thoroughbred horse racing and the Preakness Stakes in time for public voting, which begins on Tuesday, March 12.
Submissions must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, March 11 to be considered. Readers can visit this link to submit their artwork. Work created by artificial intelligence (AI, Midjourney, etc.) will not be accepted for consideration.
The winning artist will receive $4,000 and two VIP invitations to Preakness 149, which will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Their artwork will be replicated on branded merchandise available for sale. Proceeds will benefit Park Heights Renaissance, an organization dedicated to holistic community development to enhance and maintain a thriving, sustainable community.
In 2023, Justin Johnson won with his submission of โThe Face of Victory,โ depicting the face of a horse head-on with Maryland state colors. A white Preakness trophy adorns the face, and yellow Black-Eyed Susan flowers (Marylandโs state flower) frame the horseโs muzzle.
The Preakness Stakes is the second jewel of the Triple Crown, held after the Kentucky Derby and before the Belmont Stakes in New York. The Preakness was first run in 1873. It began two years before the Kentucky Derby was run for the first time.
This is the art competitionโs third year, sponsored by 1/ST and the Maryland Jockey Club in connection with the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). The contest invites entries from the 50 states and District of Columbia to showcase original, two-dimensional visual art โcapturing the distinctive essence of Thoroughbred racing and the iconic Preakness Stakes.โ
Public voting begins on March 12 and runs through March 26. Final judging takes place on March 29, and the winner will be announced on April 2.
