Wednesday is National Oyster Day.

From anniversaries to oysters, this week promises to be fun in Baltimore. Hereโ€™s a look at whatโ€™s happening in the restaurant world:

Openings & announcements

Raffyโ€™s on 36th officially opens in Hampden on Friday, Aug. 8.

Itโ€™s also a big week for anniversaries around town.

Thames Street Oyster House marked 14 years of excellent food and drinks this past week.

Happy birthday to MindPub Cafรฉ, which celebrated four years in business this past Thursday.

Bunnyโ€™s also celebrates a birthday this week โ€“ and will be throwing itself a party for the occasion on Wednesday, Aug. 6.

Gertrudeโ€™s menu has gotten a facelift, with the addition of a few new dishes, like cornmeal-encrusted blue catfish fingers.

Sadly, the well-liked restaurant Souvlaki was evicted from its Hampden space this week, after a several-month โ€œtemporary closure.โ€ The family behind the restaurant still has spots in Federal Hill and Washington, D.C. โ€“ but the closure of the Hampden location has left a hole in the community.

Investment in restaurants

Mayor Brandon Scott and the Downtown Partnership organization announced this week that 22 restaurant businesses located in the downtown area will receive grants totaling $1 million. The list of businesses benefiting from the grants includes some new initiatives along with many existing spots, like Mick Oโ€™Sheaโ€™s and The Empanada Lady.

Restaurant Weeks โ€“ still going

Summer Restaurant Week season is winding down, as Baltimore City and Harford County restaurant weeks both wrap up on Aug. 3.

However, as always, some spots will extend their deals beyond Sunday โ€“ like Sotto Sopra, where Restaurant Week will last until Aug. 10 and The Black Olive, which is extending through Aug. 9. Plus, Maryland Vegan Restaurant Month is just getting started and will continue throughout the month of August.

National Oyster Day

National Oyster Day is Tuesday, Aug. 5 โ€“ and Rye Street Tavern is celebrating with an all day Oyster Happy Hour.

Spagett Day

Spagett Day โ€“ Wet Cityโ€™s annual celebration honoring its famous Aperol and Miller High Life cocktails โ€“ is Wednesday, Aug. 6. The party at Wet City will include tons of giveaways, raffles, and more.
