With April now just a memory – it passed by in a flash, didn’t it? – it’s now time to buckle down and think about Mother’s Day, which sneaks up on us early this year on Sunday, May 8.
Fortunately, restaurants all over Baltimore are hosting special Mother’s Day brunches and dinners, so even if you’ve left plans for mom until this very last minute, you’re covered. Here’s a look at some of what’s happening around town for the holiday:
Just in time for Mother’s Day, University of Baltimore MFA student Roxanne V. Young remembers her mom’s sage advice on black pride, self-confidence, and still more.
My mother was the consummate teacher in the classroom and in life.
It was a frigid January afternoon, but I was enjoying the warmth of rare one-on-one time with my mother. We both had skipped school that day to celebrate my 10th birthday. On January 18, 1965 we sat down at the lunch counter at a Baltimore Woolworth’s. It was my first time dining out with my mother. While we waited for the waitress, she took a few minutes to discreetly give me a quick lesson on proper table etiquette.
Yes, it’s time to start thinking about Mother’s Day plans. Sure, it’s still a few weeks away, but don’t let the holiday sneak up and catch you unawares with nary a brunch reservation in sight. If your same old spots are feeling a little worn out this year, maybe it’s time to take Mother’s Day back even further than your own family traditions. In fact, maybe you should take it all the way back to 1760, when the Mount Clare House was built. This gorgeous example of colonial architecture was the state’s first museum house, and they host a delightful array of events for families and curious history-oriented visitors each month. And for Mother’s Day this year, they’ll be hosting an afternoon tea fit for a queen (or mom).
Andrea Kaplan, owner of Love Me Two Times, has been very busy. She made a few Mother’s Day suggestions below, but insists that you check out her new arrivals, as she has just had a stunning package delivered to her door steps complete with Dior, Chanel and Prada bags and shoes; Lanvin, Ebel and fabulous obscure jewelry from high end designers to semi-precious from Morocco.

Whether mom is a Baltimore native, or just visiting for the weekend, the odds are good that some quality seafood will put a smile on her face this Sunday. After all, if mom is a true Marylander, then a love for seafood is in her (and your) blood. And if she’s just stopping by, she’s likely to want some local delicacies. What’s a visit to Baltimore without the fresh seafood, right? So for Mother’s Day, plan a brunch (or lunch, or dinner) that can’t disappoint. Kali’s Court consistently serves up some of the freshest, most elegant seafood around, and with a reputation for class and atmosphere even the pickiest mom (or mom-in-law) is sure to be impressed.
