    Weekend

So, we’ve all got the air conditioning pumping now, right? Summer is here. After last week’s holiday weekend, we say this one is all about keeping cool and chilling out. Here are a few ways to do so:

Start your weekend off in the coolest way possible with Boulevard of Chic, a fashion truck rally happening in Pierce’s Park today.

      Weekend

May is in full bloom. Get out this weekend with some of our city’s most beloved traditions, or start your own. But whatever you do, make the most of it!

Start the weekend off joining 100,000 of your fellow horse fans watching the 140th Preakness Stakes today. Some of our top contender names this year? Derby winner American Pharoah, Dortmund, Firing Line, and of course Danzig Moon.

Prefer to celebrate Preakness away from the stands and closer to the clothes racks? Cupcake boutique in Green Spring Station has been having a pre-Preakness sale all week, but it extends through today! Don’t miss it!

If you’d rather get truly out and about today (and far, far, away from all horse-related activities), you could participate in Slow Food Baltimore’s Wild Bounty foraging walk and discover the wild foods that are all around you!

Tomorrow is PortFest— a national maritime expo taking place around Pier 13. The event is free, and there’s free parking as well– with plenty for kids and adults alike.

For more to do with kids, The Walters is hosting free sculpture making workshops from 10am-3pm today and tomorrow. Kids ages 3 and up can create their own masterpiece to take home out of everyday objects like clay, foil, and more!

        Weekend

Hopefully you’ve already got your brunch reservations made– or at least have perfected your Belgian waffle recipe for tomorrow. You can make this weekend all about mom, all about independent film, or better yet: both. Here’s just a sampling of what’s going on this weekend:

Today, the S.S. John W. Brown will be doing a living history cruise. The ship only does a few cruises per year, so this is a rare opportunity to board one of only two remaining, fully operational Liberty ships from WWII.

Get Up & Go! Giving Back to Baltimore

Some of this weekend’s much-anticipated events (such as the Kinetic Sculpture Race) have been postponed until further notice. But there are still plenty of ways to get out this weekend– particularly if you’re interested in helping clean up and rebuild. Here are just a few of them.

Organizations such as the Maryland Food Bank have been stretched to capacity all week providing emergency food aid throughout the city. You can follow updates on their Facebook page and website for updated calls for volunteers.

This afternoon at 1pm, the No Boundaries Coalition is calling for volunteers to help distribute food at Simmons Memorial Baptist Church.

Volunteers are also needed today for food and toiletry distribution at Macedonia Baptist Church from 12pm-4pm.

At the Baltimore Theatre Project, The Collective’s work “[re]wired” is serving as a donation drive for toiletries and personal care items. For each item donation, theater-goers will receive $1 off of their ticket price. The Saturday evening performance has been moved to 7pm, to accommodate the 10pm curfew. You can also eat a pizza for a good cause (seriously). Until June 30th, Joe Squared will offer a special pizza featuring pink sauce, chicken, diced shallots, sautéed mushrooms, sweet potatoes, mozzarella cheese, Boursin cheese, and parsley (wow). Ten percent of proceeds from this pizza will go to the Fund for Rebuilding Baltimore.Of course, there are plenty of other things to do, and ways to get involved this weekend. But we hope this provides a good jumping off point– and that you’ll let us know other ways Baltimoreans are pitching in as the weekend progresses.

This week is all about gearing up for the spring holidays. Passover and Easter fall essentially at the same time this year, so you’ve likely got plenty of invites to all kinds of gatherings in the coming week. Meanwhile, don’t forget about the great goings-on about town as your schedule fills up.
